Write out the focus question on a piece of paper to help guide your brainstorm: What skills and attributes do I have to be a successful social innovator?

Now using small cards or sticky notes, begin to brainstorm the types of skills and competencies you possess.

  • One idea per sticky note/card
  • 3-5 words per sticky note/card
  • Use large block letters

Once you have completed that step, cluster your ideas by putting them all up on a wall and see how they work together to create a larger idea.

Group together cards that contain a similar idea. Then give the clusters of ideas names to capture the larger idea.

  • What keywords do you notice in each cluster?
  • What name can you give that cluster that answers the focus question?

Think about the significance of your results and next steps.

Repeat the activity using the following focus question: What skills and attributes do I want to develop and/or strengthen to be a successful changemaker?

Task

1. Through a step-by-step process, you will brainstorm the types of skills and competencies you have as a changemaker, and organize your ideas to develop a list.

2. You will then repeat the activity to develop a list of skills and competencies you would like to strengthen and further hone.

Learning Objectives

This activity is designed to enable you to explore and identify skills and competencies you require as a changemaker. Featured skills include: planning/organizational skills, being visionary, being creative, being strategic, being decisive and analytical skills.
